Maya

Maya joined the team in 2016 and currently serves as the Stories Project’s outreach coordinator. She is responsible for finding new avenues where people might be interested in sharing their stories and new opportunities for us to speak about the work that we do. Her interest in the way victims of anti-LGBT violence are perceived and treated by the public after their deaths stems from her fascination with queer theory and the topic of abjection in particular. Over the years, she’s developed an appreciation for the messy complexities of human lives – complexities which she believes are often lost in the process of martyrdom. In her worldview, some of a person’s best qualities are demonstrated in how they react to instances where they have made a mistake or hurt someone they love, and to conceive of them as without flaw after the fact erases precisely the opportunities where they proved their character.
